Rough Ammonite "Charlie"

Large rough Ammonite fossil.

Ammonites were a species of mollusk that went extinct roughly 65 million years ago. Fossilized surfaces of ammonites vary greatly depending on the region where the specimen was discovered and the environmental conditions available when fossilization took place. This particular black coloration is normally due to the incorporation of manganese or other minerals into the shell during fossilization.
